Federica Migliardo - Physics

Federica Migliardo, 48, is a professor at the University of Messina, Italy. Over the years, she has developed a high level of internationally recognised scientific expertise (with 186 publications) in the areas of biophysics, biology and medicine, particularly in the field of neurodegenerative diseases.

Professor Migliardi's research focuses on understanding the complex interplay between biological systems and physical forces, particularly at the molecular level. Her work has shed light on fundamental processes such as protein folding, molecular dynamics, and cellular mechanics, opening new avenues for both basic research and potential applications in medicine and biotechnology.

However, her impact extends beyond her scientific achievements. Throughout her career, she has been a tireless advocate for gender diversity and equity in STEM fields. Recognizing the underrepresentation of women in research, especially in senior positions, she has been instrumental in implementing initiatives aimed at promoting the recruitment, retention, and advancement of female scientists.

A mentor for women researchers

As a mentor, Prof. Migliardi has guided numerous aspiring scientists, especially women, providing them with the support, encouragement, and resources they need to succeed in academia. She has also been actively involved in outreach programs aimed at inspiring young girls to pursue careers in STEM, dismantling stereotypes, and fostering a more inclusive scientific community. She has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to promoting open, transdisciplinary science to address the major current and future social issues (social and gender inequalities, ecological transitions, science, ethics).

Through her leadership, she has helped foster a culture of diversity and inclusion in her department and beyond. Her efforts have not only helped elevate the voices and contributions of women in science but have also enriched the research community with diverse perspectives and talents.

Her academic commitments, particularly in the area of representation and the place of women in research, are remarkable and have received international recognition:

She was awarded the UNESCO-L'Oréal prize twice, in 2005 and 2008, and received the Sapio Prize for Internationally Renowned Women in 2016. She is currently committed to the fight against gender discrimination through her work with the UNESCO-L'Oréal International Programme for Women in Science.

Prof. Migliardo is a valued partner of the University of Angers, specifically of the psychology research laboratory.

The University of Angers awarded Professor Federica Migliardo the Doctor Honoris Causa title on December 5, 2023
